Recruitment is right around the corner!
As I think back to my own experience as a new and active member, it brings back so many wonderful memories! Going through rush is such a nerve-wrecking but exciting time. You have many changes all at once: from moving into your dorm, making new friends, and being “on your own,” all while starting the rush process to see which house will become your home for the next four years!
My biggest tip for the recruitment process is to write down a quick note/ thought after each house you visit. It can be overwhelming to attend parties in each house and keep your thoughts organized during such long days. Jot down your initial impression after each house you visit! It helps keep your thoughts straight and allows you to remember specifics as you process with your friends, family, and Gamma Chi. It is important to make decisions based on YOUR experiences and YOUR gut feeling after each house.
I compiled a few tips from our Greek alum team members at Refinery Counseling Center. Here is what they had to say:
– Start with your morning with some prayer / meditation / grounding before you get into the swing of things. Take that time for yourself! It will help you navigate the fatigue, overstimulation, and long, HOT days.
– Be in touch with yourself. What do you value? What is important to you? How do you feel with different groups of women between the houses? Try focusing on your experiences rather than stereotypes you have heard.
– It is okay to have different opinions from your friends!
– It is normal to feel nervous talking to a new person.
– Trust yourself during the process and keep an open mind! Keep an open-mind
– All of the houses are special and unique, and rush is a great opportunity to make lifelong friendships!
Being involved in Greek Life is so much more than going to parties and meeting new people. It is an opportunity for philanthropy, leadership and getting out of your comfort zone. I read this great article that opened my eyes to how being involved in greek life can enhance your college experience in many different ways.
Being an active member during rush is an entirely different experience. You prep all summer and then spend countless hours in the house with the entire chapter. You are worn out from all of the preparations, while equally excited to meet the new members! It can be overwhelming, but I want to encourage you to soak it all in and enjoy this experience. Four years of college goes by so quickly! Take the time to enjoy the process and this unique time with your friends. You’ll look back in 5+ years and laugh or joke about, “that one time during rush week…!”
I hope everyone enjoys rush week! As a potential new member, gamma chi, new member or active member take the time to soak in the experience and the people around you!
